દિ. ww જૂન ૧૯૭૧૬ને દિવસે કટોકટીને એક વર્ષ પૂરું થતું હતું. જે સમયે
કટોકટીનો નિર્ણય લેવાયો હતો તે જ સમયે wl તારીખની મધ્યરાત્રીએ કટોકટીનો
નૈતિક વિરોધ પ્રગટ કરવાનો કાર્યક્રમ નક્કી થયો. બરાબર ૧૨ના ટકોરે મધ્યરાત્રીએ
ગુજરાતની બધી જ જેલો એકસાથે કટોકટી વિરુદ્ધના સૂત્રોથી ગાજી ઊઠી! જેલ
અધિકારીઓ તો ગભરાઈ જ ગયા. તરત જ બંદોબસ્ત કડક બનાવી દેવામાં આવ્યો.
આવી વિકટ પરિસ્થિતિમાં પણ ઘણા મિત્રો જેલમાં પણ તેમના વિનોદી
સ્વભાવથી વાતાવરણ ઘણું હળવું બનાવી મૂકતા હતા. સાબરમતી જેલના તખુભાની
વાતો તો બહાર અમારા સુધી પહોંચતી ત્યારે પણ હાસ્યની છોળો ઉડાડી જતી.
એક વાર પોતે જ્યોતિષી હોવાનો દાવો કરતા મિત્રે કેટલીક ચિઠ્ઠીઓ તૈયાર કરી.
તેમાં કોણ ક્યારે છૂટશે તેની માહિતી હતી. બધાએ એક પછી As AA ઉપાડીને
વાંચવાની હતી. જેમને જે તારીખ આવે ત્યારે તે છૂટશે એવો તેમનો અભિપ્રાય હતો.
કમનસીબે એક મિત્રને જૂન '૭૮માં છૂટવાની તારીખ આવી. તેમના તો બિચારાના
હોશકોશ ઊડી ગયા. પાછળથી ખબર પડી કે પેલા જ્યોતિષી ભાઈની આ તો માત્ર
મજાક જ હતી.
એક વાર એક મિત્રે સવારે સ્નાન કરતી વખતે જેલના જમાદાર સાંભળે તે
રીતે આગલી રાતે તેમને આવેલ સ્વપ્નની વાત કહેવા માંડી. જાણે હજારો માણસો
જેલ તોડવા આવતા હતા... જેલ તૂટી... જોરદાર રમખાણ થયું... બધા જ નાસી છૂટયા.
આ પ્રકારની તેમની વાતચીતથી જેલ અધિકારીએ તેમને તેડાવ્યા. બસ, પૂછપરછ
શરૂ થઈ... જેલ તોડવા કોણ આવવાનું છે? કેટલા લોકો? કોણ કોણ આવશે ? ક્યારે
આવશે? આ માહિતી ક્યાંથી આવી? આમ પ્રશ્નો જ પ્રશ્નો, પણ જવાબ માત્ર એટલો :
“આ તો સ્વખ્ું od”... સ્વપ્નની વાત હોવા છતાં જેલ-અધિકારીઓએ સાવચેતીનાં
પગલાં શરૂ કર્યા... ઠેરઠેર સંત્રીઓ વધારી દીધા...સુરક્ષાનો કડક બંદોબસ્ત ગોઠવી
દીધો.
આમ સરકાર સ્વપ્નની વાતોથી પણ ડરી જતી.
