चुकी थी। सभी का यही मानना था कि “अब तो जेलें बेगारों की छावनी बन
जाएँगी। अब अपना या देश का कोई भविष्य नहीं रहा। बड़े-बड़े दिग्गजों को भी
इंदिराजी ने चुप करा दिया है। अब तो गुलामी में ही जीवन बीतेगा।' समाज के इस
दुःख से हमें हमदर्दी थी; किंतु प्रजा की शक्ति से हम परिचित थे, वास्तविकता का
हमें ज्ञान था--और इसीलिए हम जैसे कार्यकर्ताओं के हौसलों पर कोई आँच नहीं
आई थी। परंतु सर्वाधिक दुःखदायी तथा मन at sie करनेवाला बरताव तो उन
लोगों का था, जिनके लिए--समाज के प्रति तथा मूल्यों के प्रति उनकी निष्ठा, देश
के लिए उनके बलिदान इत्यादि कारणों से-मेरे जैसे अनेक देशवासियों को बहुत
आदर था। ये लोग खुद निराश होकर हम लोगों को सशस्त्र क्रांति का उपदेश दे रहे
थे। कुछ लोग तो बेचैनीवश यह भी कहते थे कि “जल्दी-से-जल्दी संजय और
इंदिरा को खत्म कर देना चाहिए। यही एकमात्र उपाय है।' और सयाने बनकर हमें
यह सलाह भी देते थे कि 'यह कार्य संघ को ही करना चाहिए।' इस स्थिति में उन्हीं
के द्वारा पहले कभी दिए गए अहिंसापूर्ण आचार के दिद्वत्तापूर्ण प्रवचन हमें उन्हीं
को सुनाने पड़ते थे, उन्हें गांधीजी के आदर्शों की याद दिलानी पड़ती थी, उन्हें हिंदू
जीवन का अर्थ समझाना पड़ता-था। ऐसे सलाहकारों को संघर्ष के अंत तक हमें
झेलते रहना पड़ा था। किंतु प्रजा के प्रति हमारी अटूट आस्था ने हमें कभी निराश
नहीं होने दिया था। हमें समाज का पूरा सहयोग मिला था।
सफलता की दहलीज से
आपातकाल के दौरान प्रतिदिन किसी-न-किसी प्रकार से प्रतिकार होता ही
रहा। कइयों ने इन प्रतिकारों में प्रत्यक्ष-अप्रत्यक्ष तरीकों से योगदान दिया । एक तरह
से यह दौर प्रजा को और अधिक परिपक्व बनानेवाला सिद्ध हुआ। दिन-प्रतिदिन हो
रहे मूल्यों के क्षरण का समाज द्वारा दृढ़तापूर्वक प्रतिकार किया गया। इससे पहले
हुए आंदोलनों ने जममानस पर एक छवि बना दी थी कि 'यह तो सत्ता के लिए या
किसी व्यक्ति या संस्था की प्रतिष्ठा के लिए होनेवाला संघर्ष है।! अत: इस छवि से
ऊपर उठकर, “यह मूल्यों के जतन हेतु होनेवाला संघर्ष है '--इस भूमिका की जनता
को प्रतीति करवाने की जिम्मेदारी भी इन्हीं व्यक्तियों एवं संस्थाओं पर थी। जनता
ने भी उन्हीं व्यक्तियों तथा संस्थाओं पर निस्संकोच होकर भरोसा किया, जिनकी
कोई राजनीतिक आकांक्षाएँ नहीं थीं। इसी कारण से लोकनायक जयप्रकाशजी तथा
सर्वोदयी कार्यकर्ता इस संघर्ष की केंद्रीय शक्ति थे। यही प्रतिष्ठा व भूमिका राष्ट्रीय
स्वयंसेवक संघ और उसके नेताओं की भी थी।
