उनके तो जैसे होश ही उड़ गए। बँगले के आँगन में पुलिस का झुंड खड़ा था।
उन्होंने देखा कि उनसे सालों से परिचित कुछ पुलिस अधिकारी गेट पर ही खड़े थे।
बाहर दो पुलिस वैन खड़ी थीं। हड़बड़ाकर भागने पर पकड़े जाने का भय था। मन
को संतुलित कर उन्होंने एक तरकीब अपनाई। अपनी आवाज बदलकर एक
अनजान राही के समान गेट पर खड़े पुलिस अधिकारियों से ही उन्होंने किसी और
जगह का पता पूछा। पता बताना अपनी शान के खिलाफ मानकर पुलिस अधिकारी
ने उन्हें देखे बिना किसी और से पता पूछने की सलाह दे दी। जान बची देखकर वे
वहाँ से सरपट भाग निकले।
गुजरात सरकार के पतन के दूसरे दिन की बात है। एक साथी, भूमिगत होने
के बावजूद, पुलिस जिस कार पर निगरानी रखे थी उस कार को ही लेकर एक
कार्यकर्ता से मिलने के लिए निकल पड़े। रास्ते में एक पुलिसवाले की निगाह उस
कार पर पड़ गई। शिकार और शिकारी--दोनों की नजरें मिलीं, दोनों को एक-दूसरे
के खयालों का एहसास हो गया। उन्होंने कार की गति बढ़ाकर भागना शुरू कर
दिया। पुलिसवाला भी मोटरसाइकिल की गति तेज कर उनका पीछा करने लगा।
वायरलेस से आस-पास के सभी पुलिस स्टेशनों तक इस बात की सूचना पहुँच गई
थी। उत्तेजना भरे माहौल में कार, मोटरसाइकिल तथा पुलिस की गाड़ियों की रेस
शुरू हो गई। सौभाग्यवश वे बच निकलने में सफल रहे । कलोल के पास के एक
अनजाने गाँव की पशुशाला में अपनी कार छिपाकर एक किसान के वेश में वे वहाँ
से निकल भागे।
एक कॉलोनी के भीतरी हिस्से में स्थित एक मकान में हम लोग अकसर
बैठकें किया करते थे। उन बैठकों में संदेशों का आदान-प्रदान किया जाता था। एक
दिन पुलिस ने कॉलोनी पर छापा मार दिया। पूरी कॉलोनी को घेरकर एक-एक घर
की तलाशी ली जाने लगी। जिस परिवार ने संघर्ष के उपयोग हेतु वह मकान हमें
दिया था, उनकी तो हमारी चिंता में जान ही सूखी जा रही थी। उस मकान की भी
तलाशी ली गई। उस दिन श्री नाथाभाई वहाँ पर आए हुए थे, किंतु छापा पड़नें से
कुछ समय पहले ही वे वहाँ से जा चुके थे। बाद में पटा चला कि पुलिस का छापा
तो उसी कॉलोनी के एक अन्य मकान में चल रहे जुएखाने को खोजने के लिए पड़ा
था। इस घटना से हमें एक और शिक्षा मिली। इस अनुभव के बाद संघर्ष कार्य के
लिए आवासों का चयन करते समय हम उसके आस-पास के क्षेत्र की भी जाँच-
पड़ताल कर लेते थे।
