में आनाकानी कर रही थी। सभी ओर चुनावों की तैयारियाँ शुरू हो गई थीं। एक-
एक दिन मूल्यवान् था। एक महत्त्वपूर्ण बैठक के लिए दिल्ली जाने से पहले
भूमिगत नेता श्री नाथालाल झघड़ा का श्री वाघेला से बातचीत करना आवश्यक था।
श्री वाघेला जहाँ कैद थे उस वडोदरा जेल में नाथाभाई मुलाकाती बनकर पहुँच गए।
करीबन दो घंटे उन्होंने जेल में बिताए। वहाँ पर उन्होंने विचार-विमर्श किया तथा
चाय-नाश्ता भी किया और बाहर आ गए उन्हें भीतर लगी इस अप्रत्याशित देरी से
बाहर इंतजार कर रहे हम लोगों के कलेजे धड़कने लगे थे। जेलों में कैद कार्यकर्ताओं
तथा नेताओं के सलाह-मशवरों से संघर्ष में बहुत सहायता मिलती थी। इसी वजह
से उनके परामर्शों को केंद्र तक पहुँचाया जाता था।
जेल के भीतर कैद व्यक्ति का मनोबल उसके परिवार की स्थिति पर
निर्भर करता है। इस मनोवैज्ञानिक वास्तविकता को ध्यान में रखकर मीसा में फँसे
कार्यकर्ताओं के परिवारों को कोई कष्ट न हों, इस बात का हम लोग हर समय
खयाल रखते थे। इस कार्य के लिए गुजरात में राज्यव्यापी व्यवस्था की गई थी।
उन परिवारों में से जिस किसी को भी आर्थिक सहायता की आवश्यकता होती
थी, उन्हें अविलंब सहायता पहुँचाई जाती थी। कानूनन तो वे सरकार से भी
आर्थिक सहायता के हकदार थे, पर प्रति परिवार बमुश्किल पचास, सत्तर या
TSR रुपए प्रतिमाह देकर सरकार उनके जले पर नमक छिड़कने का काम
करती थी। इस प्रावधान के बावजूद अधिकतर मीसाबंदियों के परिवारों की तो
