श्री भेरूमल गेहाणी जूनागढ़ जिले के बाँटवा गाँव के एक छोटे से व्यापारी
थे। देश के बँटवारे के समय वे अपनी जन्मभूमि सिंध को छोड़कर माँ भारती की
गोद में ही शेष जीवन व्यतीत करने की पवित्र भावना के साथ गुजरात आए और
बाँटवा जैसे छोटे से गाँव में बस गए थे। छोटी उम्र से ही संघ के सक्रिय कार्यकर्ता
रहे, मिलनसार प्रकृतिवाले श्री गेहाणी कठोर परिश्रमी थे। लंबा-चौड़ा शरीर, सिर
पर छोटे-छोटे बाल, भरावदार और नुकीली मूँछोंवाले एक प्रभावशाली व्यक्तित्व
के धनी श्री गेहाणीजी को बहुत दिनों से मधुमेह और रक्तचाप की बीमारी थी। ११
जुलाई के तड़के चार बजे SS ' आपसे एक जरूरी काम है' कहकर थाने ले जाया
गया। थाने पहुँचते ही सूचना दी गई कि उन्हें मीसा के तहत गिरफ्तार किया जा रहा
है। उनका गुनाह केवल इतना था कि संघ को प्रतिबंधित घोषित किए जाने से पहले
वे बाँटवा में संघ नगर कार्यवाह थे। थाने से ही उन्हें जूनागढ़ भेज दिया गया।
जूनागढ़ में उन्हें मीसा का आरोप-पत्र दिया गया और वहाँ से उन्हें साबरमती जेल
भेज दिया गया। मधुमेह और रक्तचाप के शिकार भेरूमलजी का स्वास्थ्य यहाँ और
खराब हो गया। इलाज के लिए उन्हें सिविल अस्पताल में भरती किया गया, उस
अस्पताल में जहाँ भेरूमलजी जैसे मरीजों के लिए उचित उपचार की कोई व्यवस्था
नहीं थी।
उनकी हालत गंभीर होते ही डॉक्टरों ने उन्हें वापस जेल भेज दिया। जेल के
दरवाजे तक पहुँचते-पहुँचते उन्हें बेतहाशा उल्टियाँ होने लगीं। जेल के अधिकारियों
ने फौरन गृह विभाग को टेलीफोन कर तत्क्षण पंद्रह दिनों के लिए पेरोल की
सिफारिश की। गृह विभाग ने ५ से २० अगस्त, १९७६ तक की पेरोल मंजूर कर
दी। बीमार भेरूमलजी को जेल के दरवाजे पर ही पेरोल की सूचना दे दी गई। वार्डर
से कहकर उनका सामान भी तुरंत बाहर मँगवा लिया गया और बाहर से ही उन्हें
उसी हालत में घर जाने के लिए कह दिया गया। जिम्मेदारी से पीछा छुड़ाने के
चक्कर में मानवता को पूरी तरह से ताक पर रख दिया गया था। इस गंभीर अवस्था
में बिना किसी सहारे के भेरूमलजी जैसे-तैसे बाँटवा वापस लौटे । बाँटवा पहुँचते
