जेल के माहौल को हमेशा स्पंदित किए रहनेवाले एक मित्र को एक दिन
सबेरे-सवेरे तार मिला। उस तार में उन्हें पेरोल के लिए अनुमति दी गई थी। जिसने
कभी पेरोल की माँग ही नहीं की थी, उसे पेरोल का मिलना सभी के लिए आश्चर्य
का विषय था। कई तरह के अनुमान लगाते हुए वे जेल से बाहर आए। बाहर
निकलते ही उन्हें पता चला कि उनकी पत्नी को दिल का दौरा पड़ा है। वे सीधे
अस्पताल पहुँचे। बेसुध पत्ती को देखा। असमय जर्जरित हो चुका पत्नी का
स्वास्थ्य मीसा द्वारा फैलाई गई बरबादी का प्रत्यक्ष प्रमाण था। पत्नी की बीमारी तो
ठीक नहीं हुई, पर पेरोल की अवधि समाप्ति के करीब आ गई, अतः डॉक्टरी
प्रमाण-पत्र लेकर वे स्वयं ही गांधीनगर पहुँचे। कभी भी पेरोल न माँगनेवाले उस
सहयोगी ने पत्नी की देखभाल हेतु पेरोल की अवधि बढ़ाने के लिए करबद्ध प्रार्थना
की । बदले में उन्हें मिला जवाब आघातजनक था, 'मीसा में अगर इतनी आसानी से
पेरोल मिलने लगेगा तो मीसा को मानेगा कौन ?' मानो मानवता पूरी तरह से अदृश्य
हो चुकी थी। जवाब देनेवाला अधिकारी आपातस्थिति के नशे में इतना धुत था कि
वह अपना मानव धर्म ही भूल गया था। पेरोल की अवधि नहीं बढ़ी। जिसे सुख-
दुःख में साथ देने का कभी वचन दिया था, उस अर्धांगिनी को डॉक्टरों और भगवान्
के भरोसे छोड़कर लोकतंत्र की साधना हेतु वे जेल वापस आ गए। पर इस बार जेल
और अस्पताल के बीच की छोटी सी दूरी उन्हें हजारों मील लंबी प्रतीत हो रही थी।
अगर वे चाहते तो अनीति के सम्मुख घुटने टेककर जेल से रिहा भी हो सकते थे,
पर उन्होंने ऐसा नहीं किया।
संघ के प्रांत संघचालक डॉ. पी.वी. दोशी शुरू से ही साबरमती जेल में
थे। वे पेरोल के लिए याचना करने के पक्ष में नहीं थे। परंतु अचानक ही उनकी
पुत्री की शल्यक्रिया किए जाने की नौबत आ पड़ी। अब घर जाना आवश्यक था।
परिजनों ने पेरोल के लिए आवेदन कर दिया था। साथियों के बहुत समझाने के
बाद वे पेरोल पर जाने के लिए सहमत हुए। पेरोल मंजूर हो गई, किंतु मनुष्यता
खो बैठे मदांध अधिकारी शरारत किए बिना कैसे रह सकते थे ! पेरोल इस शर्त पर
दी गई कि वे राजकोट में प्रवेश नहीं करेंगे। कितनी अजीब शर्त थी! बेटी की
शल्यक्रिया के कारणों से मिली पेरोल इस शर्त पर दी गई थी कि जिस जगह
शल्यक्रिया होनी थी, उस जगह वे नहीं जा सकते। इससे बड़ी मानसिक यातना
और भला क्या हो सकती है !
