गुजरात की जेलों में अन्य प्रांत की जेलों के समान कैदियों पर लाठियाँ भले
ही न चलाई गई हों, परंतु यहाँ पर भी अन्य तरीकों से अत्याचार होते ही रहते थे।
जाने-माने विधिवेत्ता श्री चंद्रकांत दर को जामनगर की जेल में एकांतवास में रखा
गया था। उन्हें प्राथमिक सुविधाएँ तक नहीं दी गई थीं। इस जेल में राजनीतिक
कैदियों से भी कड़ा परिश्रम करवाया जाता था। गुजरात की जेलों में मीसा के
आरोप में कैद विद्यार्थियों के भविष्य के साथ भी खिलवाड़ किया गया था। सभी
विद्यार्थियों को परीक्षा के लिए आवेदन-पत्र भरने दिया गया। कई विद्यार्थियों ने
जेल के माहौल में भी दिन-रात, जब समय मिला, पढ़ाई कर परीक्षा के लिए तैयारी
की और परीक्षा का समय आते ही सरकार ने उन्हें परीक्षा के "लिए पेरोल देने से
इनकार कर दिया। सरस्वती के इन आराधकों का विद्यार्थी-जीवन का एक साल
भारत माता के चरणों में समर्पित हो गया। जामनगर जेल में ही 'साधना' के प्रेस-
मैनेजर श्री पन्नालाल का स्वास्थ्य इतना- बिगड़ा कि वे मरणासन्न अवस्था में आ
पहुँचे, फिर भी उन्हें आवश्यक चिकित्सा सुविधा नहीं दी गई। बड़ी मुश्किल से
जब उनके लिए पेरोल की व्यवस्था की गई और उन्हें अहमदाबाद लाकर उनका
इलाज करवाया गया तब वे बच सके | पीलिया के रोग ने तो मानो जेलों को अपना
घर ही बना लिया था। वडोदरा जेल में इस रोग का शिकार हुए कई सहयोगियों का
जेल-प्रशासन द्वारा करवाया गया उपचार उन्हें रोगमुक्त करने के बजाय उनके
स्वास्थ्य की और बिगाड़नेवाला सिद्ध हुआ। साबरमती जेल में तो दो कार्यकर्ताओं--
श्री हरिवदन vee और श्री भेरूमल की मृत्यु ही हो गई थी। श्री बी.के. मजूमदार
को सूरत की जेल में अकेला रखा गया। उन्हें प्रथम दर्जे की कोई सुविधा नहीं दी
गई स्वास्थ्य अत्यंत खराब होने के बाद ही उन्हें पेरोल पर छोड़ा गया था।
कई ऐसे कार्यकर्ता भी थे, जिनका कोई-न-कोई परिजन उनपर लगे मीसा
के आरोप का आघात न झेल पाने के कारण अपनी जान तक खो बैठा था।
अहमदाबाद के संघ के एक कार्यकर्ता श्री देवेंद्रभाई शाह को पहले ही दौर की
गिरफ्तारियों में मीसा के तहत पकड़ लिया गया था। परिवार में कमानेवाले वे
एकमात्र सदस्य थे। वृद्ध माता-पिता सहित उनका बहुत बड़ा परिवार था। श्री शाह
कपड़े की मिल में नौकरी कर अपना घर चलाते थे, अतः उनके पास जमा-पूँजी
होने का तो प्रश्न ही नहीं था। कमाऊ बेटे के जेल में होने के कारण घर की स्थिति
शोचनीय हो रही थी। इसके बावजूद उनके पिता में गजब की त्याग-भावना थी!
बच्चों की पढ़ाई के लिए उनके घर पैसे पहुँचाए गए तो उन्होंने पैसों को लेने से
