सप्ताह से वे देश के भिन्न-भिन्न राज्यों में जाकर कार्यकर्ताओं से मिला करते थे।
इसी उपक्रम में राजस्थान और हरियाणा की मुलाकात के बाद वे गुजरात पहुँचे थे।
मुझ जैसा प्रचारक भी नानाजी को आसानी से पहचान न सके, वैसा उनका
वेश-विन्यास था। धोती-कुरता पहने सफेद बालोंवाले नानाजी बिलकुल अलग
लग रहे थे। यदि वे साइकिल पर बैठकर जा रहे हों तो कोई नहीं कह सकता था कि
वे किसी सरकारी दफ्तर के साधारण से बाबू नहीं हैं। यह वेशभूषा परिस्थितिवश
बनानी पड़ी थी।
वे गुजरात की खुली हवा में केवल तीन दिन तक रहे। इस अवधि में
निर्धारित कार्यों को निपटाकर वे महाराष्ट्र के लिए रवाना हो गए। गुजरात के इस
दौरे में वे अनेक लोगों से मिले। इन मुलाकातों के समय मुझे भी उनके साथ रहने
का अवसर मिला।
श्री जॉर्ज के साथ मैं लगातार संपर्क में था, अत: उनकी भी मैंने नानाजी के
साथ भेंट करवाई। जिनके नाम मात्र से श्रीमती गांधी व उनकी सरकार काँपती थी,
जिन्हें खोजने के लिए देश भर की पुलिस जमीन-आसमान एक कर रही थी ऐसे इन
दो संघर्ष पुरुषों का अगस्त के प्रथम सप्ताह में मिलन हुआ। इस मुलाकात में देश
की तत्कालीन तथा भावी परिस्थितियों के बारे में दोनों ने आपस में विस्तृत विचार-
विमर्श किया।
इस मुलाकात में एक बात और अधिक स्पष्ट हुई कि कैसी भी विषम स्थिति
में भी 'लोक संघर्ष समिति' गांधीवादी तौर-तरीकों से ही प्रतिकार करने के पक्ष में
थी। श्री नानाजी देशमुख की भी गांधीवाद में दृढ़ आस्था थी। जबकि श्री जॉर्ज
किसी भी तरीके से आपातस्थिति के प्रणेताओं को उखाड़ फेंकने के पक्ष में थे।
