थे “परिणामस्वरूप इस आंदोलन के प्रभाव को देशव्यापी बनने से रोकने के लिए
मजबूरन चिमनभाई पटेल को इस्तीफा देने की सूचना केंद्र सरकार को देनी पड़ी।
इस सूचना के बाद भी गुजरात की प्रजा को लगातार संघर्ष करना पड़ा । कई युवाओं
ने अपने प्राणों की आहुति दे दी। कई निर्दोष युवा महाकाल के मुख का ग्रास बन
गए। गुजरात की धरती ने मानो चंडिका का रूप धारण कर लिया था। संपूर्ण गुजरात
में एक रक्त क्रांति का निर्माण हुआ। परिस्थिति की गंभीरता को देखते हुए और
संभावित परिणामों से सचेत होकर अंतत: चिमनभाई पटेल ने इस्तीफा दे दिया।
श्री चिमनभाई के त्यागपत्र से स्वतंत्रता-प्राप्ति के पच्चीस वर्षों बाद फिर
एक बार प्रजा का अपनी शक्ति में विश्वास सुदृढ़ हुआ।
विधानसभा चिसर्जन
जनता के इस आत्मविश्वास ने उसे और आगे बढ़ने के लिए प्रेरित किया।
चिमनभाई के त्यागपत्र मात्र से प्रजा संतुष्ट नहीं हुई। प्रजा का अपने ही द्वारा चुने
गए विधायकों के प्रति रोष अभी शेष था। आंदोलन का दूसरा लक्ष्य बनी गुजरात
विधानसभा और विधानसभा विसर्जन की माँग ने जोर पकड़ा। एक पराजय से
व्यथित एवं क्षुब्ध केंद्र सरकार दूसरी पराजय को झेलने के लिए कतई तैयार न थी,
वह विधानसभा विसर्जन की माँग के समक्ष घुटने टेकने को बिलकुल सहमत नहीं
थी। इसके अलावा, सरकार के झुकने से कांग्रेस के लिए कई खतरे उत्पन्न हो
सकते थे, यह निश्चित था। परंतु जनता के बढ़ते जोश एवं आत्मविश्वास ने
आंदोलन को और अधिक तीव्र किया। दूसरी ओर, सरकारी दमन भी क्रूरतम होता
जा रहा था। नतीजतन, गुजरात को योग्य दिशा-दर्शन की जरूरत महसूस हुई; एक
योग्य पथप्रदर्शक की आवश्यकता उत्पन्न हुई।
ऐसे समय में गुजरात को दिशा देने का जिम्मा श्री मोरारजीभाई ने लिया।
उन्होंने विधानसभा के विसर्जन की माँग को सही ठहराते हुए माँग के समर्थन में
आमरण अनशन शुरू कर दिया। उनके अनशन ने आंदोलन को बहुत शक्ति प्रदान
की और प्रतिष्ठा भी दिलाई। अब सरकार के पास विधानसभा विसर्जन की माँग को
